REPORT ON 1999 FAI FREE FLIGHT WORLD CUP
by Ian Kaynes Chairman, CIAM FF Subcommittee November 1999
During 1999 the Free Flight World Cup ran for a successful thirteenth year. The total number of entries in all the World Cup competitions was 2567, which is the third highest total ever and above the average for this decade. In this period the total has shown a gently increasing trend, while the number of competitions has also been increasing, resulting in a slight dilution of the average entry in each competition.
F1A was won by Pieter de Boer of Netherlands ahead of last year’s winner Victor Stamov and fellow Dutchman Allard van Wallene. In F1B the title was retained by Oleg Kulakovsky of Ukraine with three competitions wins with the following places taken by Viktor Roshonoks (Latvia) and Walt Ghio (USA). The F1C title has also remained in the same hands, with Eugene Verbitsky holding the title of F1C World Cup winner for a record fourth consecutive year. He also scored three wins and since these were in well-supported competitions he had a lead of 12 bonus points more than Juri Roots (Estonia) who had also won three events but with smaller entries. Third place was taken by Sigurd Seydel of Germany.
There were seven competitions in 1999 in class F1E with a constant level of participation in these European events. The victor was Daniel Petcu of Romania with points from two wins and a second place and, since his wins included the well-supported international adjacent to the World Championships, his score included 12 bonus points. Runner-up was Reinhard Wolf of Austria and third place was taken by Ivan Crha of the Czech Republic.
ORGANISATION
The organisation of the World Cup ran smoothly apart from the usual late receipt of results from a few competition organisers. The receipt of more competition results by email has helped speed the analysis of results and prompt posting of updates on the FAI web site. Again this year, one of the emailed results have again been accompanied by a computer virus - organisers please get your systems in order or send results in plain text format.
During the year results and news have been issued to organisers in the form of a World Cup newsletter, but less emphasis has been placed on this option as a result of the widespread access to the results on the internet.
