REPORT ON THE 1990 FAI FREE FLIGHT WORLD CUP

by Ian Kaynes Chairman, CIAM FF Subcommittee March 1991

1990 was another successful year for the Free Flight World Cup. There were "new" winners in each event - the remarkable run of three F1A wins in succession by Stefan Rumpp of Germany has ended, but his achievement will be recognised by the award of a special trophy for him to retain permanently as a record of his triple win.

In 1990 there were more competitors who scored in more than one event, as shown in the statistics section, and since points are awarded to only the top 14 places at each competition this has resulted in the apparent drop in the number of competitors scoring points in the 1990 World Cup compared to 1989. This reflects the interest of the competitors in participating in the World Cup events. Organisation ran smoothly except that the F1E results from Italy were only obtained indirectly and after a long delay. Initial announcement of the F1A results were in error, since the final victor's name had not been recognised as the same person in all his results.

The list of events to count towards the 1991 World Cup reaches a record total of 25 competitions. This high number results from the change in regulations for this year which now allows two competitions in any one country. Remember that there is a limitation on scoring points from the competitions thus introduced: for any country in Europe which has two competitions on the World Cup schedule in the same class, a competitor may count only his one better score from the two events. This restriction does not apply to competitions in countries outside Europe.
