REPORT ON THE 1989 FAI FREE FLIGHT WORLD CUP

by Ian Kaynes Chairman, CIAM FF Subcommittee March 1990

The 1989 Free Flight World Cup in was again a successful event for classes F1A, F1B and F1C and also there was the new addition in 1989 of a category for F1E slope soaring gliders.

There were four competitions counting towards the F1E World Cup and it was won by Klaus Salzer of Austria, a notable success achieved with a victory at the last World Cup event, an open international held in Poland in conjunction with the first F1E World Championships - which were also won by Klaus. There is not yet a trophy for the F1E category World Cup (and currently the full results are not available on the web site).

There was an increased number of competitions counting towards the 1989 World Cup for the F1A, F1B and F1C classes. The most remarkable achievement must be that of Stefan Rumpp of West Germany who has won the F1A title for the third consecutive years - there have been only three World Cups, so that Stefan is the only person to have won the F1A World Cup! This year, for the first time in any of the World Cup classes, he recorded three wins to amass the maximum possible 75 points. The winner of F1B is Norm Furutani of USA, who travelled to Europe for a win in Yugoslavia and a second place in France, to go with a fifth place in one of the two competitions in the USA. The F1C winner Jan Ochman is from Poland and took advantage of some easing of international travel restrictions to win the Scandinavian Open to go with the other best two scores from his total of five scoring competitions.

The 1990 World Cup will again include a good spread of competitions in all classes, including five for F1E. It is notable that the Antonov Cup at Kiev, USSR, has been proposed for inclusion in the World Cup events in 1990. This event had been discussed at the 1989 CIAM Bureau meeting but the date was not available at that time and its inclusion in the initial World Cup list was not possible. A jury of Free Flight Subcommittee members agreed in January 1990 that in exceptional circumstances and possible communication misunderstandings the event should be added to the World Cup, subject to approval for the FAI Sporting Calendar. I will again be undertaking the collection and calculation of 1990 World Cup results. Copies of results will be available, issued four times during the year, for a fee of £8.00 to cover the costs, payable to I KAYNES as a cheque in pounds drawn on a UK bank.
