REPORT ON 2009 FAI FREE FLIGHT WORLD CUP
by Ian Kaynes Chairman, CIAM FF Subcommittee November 2009
This was another successful year for the Free Flight World Cup with 4169 total entries in all the events.
The F1A World Cup was retained by Per Findahl of Sweden., with a victory by having one more bonus point than Tomaz Slokar of Slovenia. This is now Per’s 6th time winning the F1A Cup which is a record for any classes of the Free Flight World Cup. F1A-Junior was won by Per’s son Oskar, who won by two bonus points more than Anrijs Plume of Latvia. It is interesting to note that in 2008 Oskar had placed second in F1B Junior.
F1B was won by Bernd Silz (Germany). Bernd had the same number of points from three events as Alex Andriukov (USA) and took the victory by having more points from his fourth event. Thirs place was taken by Michael Woolner (GB) who had placed second in 2008. The F1B Junior World Cup was retained by Alexandra Warakomska (Poland), two points ahead of Tomas Mackus (Lithuania) who was one point in front of Paul Coutineau (France).
The 2007 winner Reinhard Truppe (Austria) returns to the top of the 2009 F1C results. He had the same number of points as Gabor Zsengeller (Hungary, third place in 2008) and Laszlo Patocs (also Hungary). Two extra events were need to be counted to determine the winner.
In F1Q Andreas Lindner (Germany) won and Klaus Salzer (Austria) was second, reversing the top two places of 2008. Frank Pollard (USA) was third.
The F1E World Cup was closely fought and was decided at the Toszek Cup, the final competition of the year. Victory at that event gave the World Cup win to Stanislaw Kubit (Poland) with hime overtaking Maurizio Tomazzoni (Italy) and Alain Roux (France). Jakub Drmla of Slovakia won F1E Junior, with second place taken by Mihnea Niculescu (Romania) and Dominika Srmlova (Slovakia).
ORGANISATION
Most 2009 results were returned very quickly by email and the only significant delay was the 8 weeks before Canada Cup results arrived. A few organisers persisted in defying requests and supplying results as pdf files, which at best entail reconstituting the format before results can be processed.
At the 2007 Plenary meeting F1P Junior was added as a new class and in addition F1P could be flown alongside F1C models and be counted in the results for the F1C World Cup. This has continued to be the subject of confusion: in one case an organiser stating that the results were not combined since he did not agree with the rule (I combined these results for World Cup processing).
There were some complaints about poor quality of organisation at some events. A particular problem was the timing of the 10 minute round for flyoff flights. These were reported to have been stopped at 9 minutes at both the Vsechov and Puszta events, enquiries suggesting that the organisers had timed the flyoff with a clock rather than a stopwatch.
STATISTICS
The individual events F1A, F1A-Junior, etc show the numbers relevant to that event. The column headed ALL is the total of number of competitors in the full events (F1A B C E Q) which takes account of the fact that juniors have also been included in the results of the full event.
