REPORT ON 2000 FAI FREE FLIGHT WORLD CUP
by Ian Kaynes Chairman, CIAM FF Subcommittee December 2000
This year there were more competitions in each class of the Free Flight World Cup but at 2433 there were slightly fewer participants than in 1999. The number was, however, slightly more than in 1998, the most comparable recent year since 1999 was a World Championship year with inflated worldwide entries in F1A F1B F1C at the event held adjacent to the Championships. There were two extra competitions in F1E and the number of entries rose in proportion to that increase.
F1A was won by Maarten van Dijk of Netherlands with three wins, clearly in front of Stefan Rumpp (Germany) with two wins and a third place, and Rudolf Holzleitner (Austria) with one win, one second and one third place.
The victor in F1B was Ivan Kolic of Yugoslavia who also won the F1B Junior World Championship this year. He achieved four wins out of seven results, followed by Serge Tedeschi (France) with three wins out of his record number of 11 competitions at which he placed high enough to be eligible for World Cup points. Oleg Kulakovsky of Ukraine was third
F1C was closely fought, with the winner Gabor Zsengeller of Hungary just ahead of Zbigniew Szablewski from Poland, both having two wins and a second place and separated by one bonus point. Gerhard Aringer of Austria was third. The holder of the F1C World Cup for the previous four years, Eugeny Verbitsky, achieved the same result as the winner (two wins and a second) but the points of the Sierra Cup win were reduced because it was a tied result.
In F1E Ivan Crha was the clear winner with 138 points ahead of Romanians Daniel Petcu and Marian Popescu with 109 and 105 points respectively. The top two flyers had both achieved World Cup points results in seven out of the nine competitions in F1E.
ORGANISATION
The organisation of the World Cup ran smoothly apart from the usual late receipt of results from a few competition organisers. The large majority of competition results were submitted by email which helps the analysis of results and prompt posting of updates on the FAI web site.
PROTEST
A World Cup protest was received against the Yugo Cup which was held at Zrenjanin, Yugoslavia, in October. The protest was considered by a World Cup jury consisting of three members of the CIAM Free Flight Subcommittee: Javier Abad, Pierre Chaussebourg, and Anselmo Zeri.
The conclusion of the jury was that the event should not count for the World Cup because it was not run in accordance with the Sporting Code. World Cup rules item 3 states that "Contests included in the World Cup must appear on the FAI Contest Calendar and be run according to the FAI Sporting Code." The specific Sporting Code infringements were that:
1) The organisers had no means of measuring the wind speed which is required to be able to meet the conditions of Sporting Code paragraph B.11.1.(a).
2) The duration of the round was not measured accurately. This is against the Sporting Code requirement paragraph 3.1.3.(b) that the duration of the round must be announced in advance.
The World Cup jury regretted that more action was not taken by the jury at the competition at uphold the requirements of the sporting code.
